Breaking Laws to Gain Freedom: Liberating Stories from Detroit is a theatrical piece penned by Extra Mile Playwrights Theatre retelling of true local events that had an impact on the civil rights and liberties of Black people nationwide. Spanning 1833-1959, these stories offer glimpses into the narratives of fugitives who escaped to Canada, soldiers who took up arms, and neighbors who fought for their rightful places in the city. The writers of this show include Ann Eskridge, Gail Parrish, Forest Hudson, Maureen Paraventi, and Shawntai Brown. The Extra Mile Playwrights Theatre is a group of Detroit-area playwrights, actors, directors and producers dedicated to showcasing local theatre. The mission of EMPT is to build community by creating and developing transformative stories through the written word, storytelling and performance.
The show runs appx 1 hour, 50 minutes, including a 10 minute intermission. A water based haze is used.

Cassius Merriweather (they/them) is ecstatic to tell the city’s countless tales in Extra Mile Playwright’s Breaking Laws to Gain Freedom: Liberating Stories from Detroit. Studying under Henri Franklin, Jan Blixt, and Kelli Crump, they’ve appeared in numerous productions throughout Metro-Detroit. LaShanette Harrison

LaShanette ‘LaLa’ Harrison is an amazing entertainer in the Metro Detroit area, last seen at Open Book as Adenikeh in Nollywood Dreams. Over the years, she has immersed herself in all forms of art and isn’t looking to stop. Her training began at a young age as she became enamored with film, television, writing, comedy, and more. She found herself taking lessons at and eventually working for the Michigan Actors Studio. The next step in her journey was getting on stage as a stand-up comedian. This allowed LaLa to tell stories and connect on a level she hadn’t before. It didn’t take long for the calls to come in requesting her specific brand of humor. LaLa continues her journey towards her dream of being a full-time entertainer and making it to the big stage.

Grace Jolliffe (she/her) is excited to work with Open Book Theatre and Extra Mile for the first time. She recently graduated from Kenyon College with a B.A. in Drama, and is excited to work in the Michigan theatre community again. Liberation for all, Free Palestine!
Joe Gaskill

Joe Gaskill is a 2019 graduate of Wayne State University with a BA in Theatre Performance and has remained active in the performing arts ever since. Recent theatre roles include Reuben Soady (Escanaba in da Moonlight), multiple roles in Office Hours, Hal (Proof), Ricky (Nooner), Sandy (Duck Hunter Shoots Angel), and Des (You Talk White and Dance With Me), along with numerous sketch comedy shows at Planet Ant Theatre. Outside of theatre, Joe also works as a voice actor and playwright, and is currently attending grad school with a focus on library science.

He's been seen on stages around metro-Detroit, recently in "The Book Club Play" (Inspired Acting Company), "Lost in Yonkers" (Michigan Stage), "Photograph 51" (University of Detroit Mercy), and "Georgiana and Kitty: Christmas at Pemberley" here at Open Book! Kelli Williams is excited to make her professional debut with Open Book Theatre Company. Her favorite past roles include LuLu in Cabaret (Ridgedale Players); Cecily, Duchess of York, in Richard III (Brevity Shakespeare); Prosecutor Mara in Miracle on 31st Street (Avon Players), and Matilda “Tillie” Binks, in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (Clarkston Village). Kelli is a proud student of the Detroit Repertory Theatre's Actor's Workshop and currently in her seventh consecutive workshop session. When not acting, Kelli enjoys riding horses, taking road trips, and is an avid softball player. Kelli thanks her family and friends for their continued support of her passion.

Shardai R. Davis

Shardai R. Davis is a classically trained actor, dancer, singer, and musician. Some of her performances include: Polonius (Hamlet), Calpurnia (To Kill A Mockingbird), Kitty Duvall (The Time of Your Life), Athena (The Odyssey), Mrs. Walker (Tommy), and as a special appearance vocalist in The People’s Temple. Davis has a high level of proficiency in piano, martial arts, and scenic design, and other skills and techniques. She would like to give a shout out to her Mom & Dad for always supporting her and inspiring her to live her dreams!

nick Easterling has always loved playing make-believe and has been doing so with a script for the last nine years, receiving a degree in it in 2023 from Wayne State University. Over the years having the fortune to get to play with wonderful scripts such as Ste in Beautiful Thing (2024), Warren in This is Our Youth (2022), Georg in Spring Awakening (2021), and Ram in Heather's (2019). nick has had the privilege of telling Detroit stories twice before, in Plowshares' Hastings Street the Musical (2022), and A Host of People's production Dot's Home (2023/4) in Detroit, Chicago, and Nashville. He looks forward to you joining this experience in the house, and hopes you take away a new appreciation for our ancestor's struggle in our shared history

Ashley M. Lyle is thrilled to be the director of this deeply fascinating piece of art created by the Extra Mile playwrights. Some of her credits, as an actor, include Who Will Sing for Lena (Matrix Theatre, Detroit); Ain't Misbehavin’: A Fats Waller Musical (Jewish Ensemble Theatre, Walled Lake); Mom's Boyfriend is an Ass (Obsidian Theatre Festival, Detroit); and Nollywood Dreams (Open Book) where she won Best Actor in a Play (comedy) by EncoreMichigan.com. Ashley previously directed Dance with Me, one OBTC's 2022 Driveway Theatre shows. Kiah Manthei (she/her) most recently co-directed Catch Me If You Can for the Downriver Youth Performing Arts Center (DYPAC). She stage managed Open Book’s productions of Dontrell Who Kissed the Sea, How I Learned to Drive and Nollywood Dreams. She has also assistant directed Legally Blonde: The Musical (DYPAC), and has stage managed various other plays and musicals in the Metro Detroit area, including My Dad Was Fifteen Feet Tall (Outvisible Theatre Company), Princess Whatsername (DYPAC), The Turn of the Screw (Outvisible Theatre Company), and Xanadu (DYPAC). Kiah graduated from Wayne State University in 2019 with a Master of Social Work. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with her cat, going to concerts, reading, and spending time with loved ones!
Harley Miah
Lighting Designer
Harley Miah (Lighting Designer) is a freelance artist for theatres, nightclubs, concerts, and festivals across the country, as lighting designer for IKO Global Productions. He has been Open Book’s resident lighting designer since its inception, earning Wilde Awards for Best Design – Lights for Open Book's production of RED in 2014, and THIS RANDOM WORLD in 2022. Harley's work has recently been seen at The Ringwald, Tipping Point, Detroit Public Theatre and the newly opened Inspired Acting Company in Walled Lake. Harley also designs lights for "Detroit Presents: Live from Marygrove" on Detroit Public TV, which airs Wednesdays at 7:30 on WTVS and St George's Academy in NYC. Harley spends spare his time with his loving partner Reyna spoiling their cats, traveling, and seeing as many shows as they can in this great theatre community we have in Southeast MI. He hopes you do the same.
Ashley Marie
Co-Scenic Designer, Builder, Painter
Ashley currently serves as the Facility & Operations Manager at the Allen Park Center for the Arts, as well as co-owns Spectrum Staging, an independent technical theatre company. With over 16 years of theatrical experience, Ashley considers herself a jack of all trades and is versed in directing, costuming, choreography, lighting, properties, set construction, production management, stage management, and more. She has an extensive dance background, and was a competitive ballroom dancer at her alma mater, Michigan State University ('12). In her free time, she enjoys relaxing with her partner Valerie and their menagerie of animals.
Valerie Compau
Co-Scenic Designer, Builder, Painter
Valerie is a self-taught Broadway World Award winning lighting designer, and is knowledgeable in a multitude of technical theatre elements. She has over 7 years of experience in lighting alone, and even more in general stage work. Her creative designs have been credited with a number of local theatre companies, both professional and amateur, including Shakespeare in Detroit and Obsidian Theater Festival, as well as various community theatres and high schools. Although Val specializes in lighting design, she has also been known to run soundboards, design sets, stage manage, and direct. She has a passion for teaching young minds the technical aspects of theatre and the importance of the backstage crew. Val co-owns Spectrum Staging, an independent technical theatre company, with her partner Ashley.
Cheryl Zemke
Costume Designer
Cheryl Zemke is a Multi Award winning Fashion Designer, Artist, and Owner of C. Creations Custom Sewing & Design. Her store, Cheryl Zemke Boutique, is located at 2934 Biddle Ave. in downtown Wyandotte. The boutique sells her handmade fashion and art, as well as “Artfully Chosen” fashion and gift items. She also does custom sewing and alterations on site. Zemke was born and raised in southern Michigan, received a B.S.B.A. from Lawrence Technological University, and earned an Associate Degree in Merchandising at the International Academy of Merchandising and Design, graduating as class Valedictorian. Zemke has been a part of the Open Book team since 2017, this show will mark her 16th as a costume designer. Tim Pollack
Properties Designer
Tim Pollack is a theatre artist based in south eastern Michigan. He earned an Associates in Theatre from Henry Ford Community College before going on to get his BA in Acting from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Tim has served as the artistic and technical director at the Cabrini Monarch Theatre Troupe for eight years, selecting, directing, producing, and designing lights, set, costumes, sound, and props for 14 productions. Recently, you may have seen Tim’s work as a designer in “Lovebird Jamboree” at Planet Ant theatre, “Return to the Forbidden Planet” at Penny Seats Theatre Company, and "The Book Club Play" at The Inspired Acting Company. Tim worked as constructionist on the feature film “9 Parts of Desire, as well as Prop Department Head on the feature films “A Girl Like Him” and “House of Ka.”

Ann Eskridge, Gail Parrish, Forest Hudson, Maureen Paraventi, and Shawntai Brown
Ann E. Eskridge is a 2021 Kresge Fellow in playwriting, a 2013 Black Metropolitan Research Consortium Fellow and a Fulbright Hays Group Project Abroad participant in Brazil. She has written on subjects like the Underground Railroad, all-black towns in Oklahoma, New Orleans’ free people of color, the Gullah community on the Sea Islands, and Chicago’s black Tin Pan Alley. She is a founder of Extra Mile Playwrights Theatre.
Maureen Paraventi writes plays, novels, nonfiction and songs. When she’s not writing, she acts in local theatrical productions, sings in a pop/rock/Irish band (McLaughlinsAlley.com) and spends way too much time on Facebook. Maureen’s full-length and one act plays have been produced in Michigan, Florida and New York, and one, “The Bucket List of Booze Club,” was produced by the Freshwater Theatre in Minneapolis in May 2020.
Gail Parrish is an award-winning playwright whose works have been staged nationally, internationally and on network television. Her plays include Leavings, Bringing Back Josephine (Saving Grace), Elevator, Blood Red Summer and others. Some of Parrish’s awards include semifinalist in Eugene O’Neill Playwrights Conference, semifinalist in the American Blues Theatre’s Blue Ink Award, co-winner of Polarity Ensemble Theatre’s Dionysus Festival, an Emmy nomination from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences- Midwest.
Forest Hudson began his acting journey as a student at the Detroit Repertory Theatre, Actors Workshop. Acting and Theatre started out as a hobby, now they are his passions. His credits include Preying Wolves Pray, The Devils Funeral, Satin Doll The Musical, Broadz on Broadway, Matrix X Detroit/Gentrification Nation, Beating All Odds/A Miracle of Enchantment, and Love and Justice.
Shawntai Brown is a Detroit writer, media commentator, literacy coordinator and teaching artist. Her work centers on empowering communities through experiences that educate, challenge and entertain. She co-hosts a web show “Woman Crush Everyday” reviewing Black woman-centered queer media and interviewing content producers, and co-founded Black LGBT+ Plays, a creative development network for film and theatre creatives.
