“I want to be a character in all my works.” –Kurt Vonnegut
Open Book is delighted to host Dr. Gregory Sumner for a PRE-SHOW discussion on Saturday, March 5th. Come and learn more about Vonnegut and his writing, then enjoy our delightful production of Who Am I This Time? (and other conundrums of love). Your ticket gets you into both the discussion and the play!
Professor Greg Sumner will offer a short overview of the life and fiction of this uniquely autobiographical writer, a midwestern “child of the Great Depression” who experienced the apocalypse in Dresden in World War II and survived to talk about it. The stories we will bring to the stage display the best of Vonnegut’s craft as he explores themes of identity, loss and love with a sensitivity and dark humor that speaks to us today.
Greg Sumner, JD, PhD, has been professor of history at the University of Detroit Mercy since 1993. He is the author of UNSTUCK IN TIME: A JOURNEY THROUGH KURT VONNEGUT’S LIFE AND NOVELS (Seven Stories Press, 2011) and wrote a preface to the re-release of the collection WELCOME TO THE MONKEY HOUSE (2014). Dr. Sumner is from Vonnegut’s home town, Indianapolis. His latest book is DETROIT IN WORLD WAR II (History Press, 2015).
This production is supported by the Michigan Council for the Arts & Cultural Affairs Minigrant Program, administered by the City of Detroit Recreation Department.
