It has been the dream, since the start of Open Book Theatre Company, to have our own home – particularly a black box performing space.
A permanent home will provide opportunity for more programming.
- Classes and workshops
- Playwrighting festivals
- Open mic nights and improv
- Business events
- Community outreach
- And more!
A permanent black box space is flexible.
- Lights, sound, seating and stage can all be rearranged to best tell the story
- Flexibility will foster creativity in our artists and our audience
- Our lobby will also be available for various uses
A permanent location will root us in the community.
- We’ll be better able to get to know our neighbors and tell the stories that connect them
- Audiences will enjoy local restaurants for a night out
- Local artists will have a place to work, play, learn and grow
- We’ll provide a space that audiences know and trust to provide thoughtful and challenging cultural exchange

Our Story, currently in progress
Open Book was established in December 2013, and we spent time setting up our founding documents, establishing our board of directors, gaining our 501(c)(3) status, finding space to rent for performances, storage, rehearsals and more
We opened in September 2014 with a 4 show INAUGURAL SEASON: Sylvia, Red, Independence and Kimberly Akimbo. Each show had 6 performances over 2 weekends (and we added a performance for Red!) We received rave reviews from audiences and critics, as well as 2 Wilde Award Nominations – and one win for best lighting design (Harley Miah, for our production of Red. The Wilde Awards consider all the professional theatres across the entire state of Michigan, and it’s quite an honor to even be nominated – particularly in an inaugural season!) In March we went into schools with dramatic workshops based around a Dr. Seuss book in celebration of National Reading Month. In the summer of 2015 we presented a family show at the new Market Center Park in Southgate.
In September 2016 we opened our 5 show SECOND SEASON: The Shadow Box, Dead Man’s Cell Phone, Bauer, Who Am I This Time (& Other Conundrums of Love) and Calypso’s Corner. We expanded from 6 performances per production to 8. Our audiences continue to grow and we continue to receive rave reviews from our audience and critics. With Who Am I This Time we introduced a pre-show speaker to our offerings, and our final show of the season is a World Premiere!
Building our new home! You can help us write this chapter, and many, many more to come!
